The 'Nytt' Side Chair was handmade by woodcrafter, Ben Willis of Crystal Palace London. It is primarily made of striking beechwood. Ben has dexterity with wood and specialises in the craft of chairmaking using the greenwood technique. The core corpus of the furniture chosen for the 'Nunhead Collection' on Canopi is sourced from wind blown reclaimed wood which would have been incinerated or left to decay.
Ben was able to save fallen trees in Nunhead Cemetery, South London, near where he lives, that would otherwise have been left to rot. The beech trees were planked and seasoned over several years to be ready for use in furniture making. Owning this piece is to have something deeply rooted - literally - in London.
Behind the Chairs
"These compact side chairs are both beautiful and functional, deriving their name from the Old English word for useful.
The subtly shaped seats make them extremely comfortable, while the curved crinoline stretcher give them a strong sculptural presence. They're ideal to sit around the dining table or to tuck into a corner where space is tight.
They can be made in a variety of timbers and finishes. The pair in the main image, which are available now, are Scottish elm with an ash frame finished in black and red milk paint. The others are in spalted beech and painted ash."
